randy c9561a5489 Add an offline terrain shadow overlay to the Overlays panel
Shades the visible map by whether each point is currently blocked from
the sun by surrounding terrain (shademap.app-style), computed fully
offline via the same Terrarium DEM tiles the Terrain shading layer
already renders, plus this session's sun-position math and Radar's
checkbox+expandable UI shape.

dem.js pulls elevation-at-a-point out on its own since TODO.adoc's
slope readout and solar calculator will need the same lookup.

randy a8d58abaca Move Radar and Terrain shading into the Overlays panel
Both used to be their own separate sidebar icons; neither has
anything to manage beyond on/off, same as Wikipedia already got its
own Overlays entry for. Terrain shading is a plain checkbox item now.
Radar keeps its scrub/forecast controls, but behind an explicit
expand (clicking its name), separate from the checkbox — checking it
on shouldn't force the details open, and expanding to scrub/check the
forecast shouldn't also flip the layer on.

Both controls now build their own <li> (RadarControl.mount(li),
HillshadeControl.mount(li) — the latter moved into overlays.js
entirely, it has no reason to live in map.js once it's not building
its own sidebar icon) rather than a whole sidebar-item + flyout the
way they used to.

Also gave each Overlays item a leading icon: Wikipedia and Terrain
shading reuse existing NPS pictograms (WIKI_ICON, and WILDERNESS_ICON
newly exported from icons.js's forest entry — NPS has no dedicated
mountain/terrain glyph, wilderness-22.svg is the closest honest
match). Radar's is hand-drawn (a rain cloud) since NPS's set has
nothing weather-related to reuse.

randy c5b4a9ffb2 Move the Wikipedia layer into its own "Overlays" panel
Wikipedia doesn't belong inside "Tracks & Points" — that panel is for
files you add/remove/reorder, while Wikipedia is a live layer with
nothing to manage, just on/off. Gave it its own sidebar panel
(#overlays-panel, same shell as LiveTrackPanelControl) instead, sized
to hold more such checklist-only layers later without a redesign.

Moved all the wiki layer logic out of GpxPanelControl into a new
OverlaysControl (public/js/overlays.js). svgToImageData/badgeImageId/
escapeHtml are now exported from gpx.js so it doesn't have to
reimplement them — the same three helpers a second overlay would also
need.

randy 787df5478d Replace the per-popup "Nearby on Wikipedia" link with a live Wikipedia layer
The old link only ever surfaced one nearby article at a time, buried
in whatever POI's popup you happened to open, and only for uploaded
files with a category. Replaced it with a standalone "Wikipedia"
toggle under the renamed "Tracks & Points" panel: enabling it adds a
live map layer that refetches GET /api/kiwix/nearby on every pan/zoom
and plots every nearby article as its own point.

kiwix-serve's own geo search never echoes back a result's coordinates
(confirmed live against the real production ZIM, both its HTML and
?format=xml output) — it only filters by distance from a point. So
Maptool::Kiwix.nearby fetches each matching article's own page too and
reads its <meta name="geo.position"> tag, which every geotagged
Wikipedia article carries. Tried parallelizing those per-article
fetches with threads first; measured no improvement against the real
ZIM (kiwix-serve appears to serialize requests regardless), so it
stayed sequential — ~1.6s for a 30-result page, fine for a
refetch-on-pan-end layer.

Clicking a point opens a small popup linking to the article (proxied
through the existing /kiwix/* passthrough). New WIKI_ICON (NPS's
bookstore-22.svg) marks these, kept out of POI_ICONS since that set
doubles as notes.js's icon-picker option list and this fixed-glyph
layer has no per-feature category to key off of.

randy 1733fc7c1b Give Overpass POI downloads icons/descriptions and unique filenames
CI / check (push) Successful in 41s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 12s
Overpass categories now carry the same icon+color styling a p4n2gpx
waypoint gets, instead of falling back to gpx.js's plain red marker,
plus a popup description built from opening_hours/operator/website
tags. Supermarket/convenience store reuse NPS's generic store glyph,
the only honest match in that icon set.

Each plugin run's saved filename now bakes in the area's center and a
timestamp, so repeated downloads for different areas land as separate,
identifiable files instead of overpass-pois.geojson/-1/-2/...

randy 72ffd0ef18 Add an import plugin system, with the Overpass POI query as its first plugin
CI / check (push) Successful in 40s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 13s
A plugin is a directory under plugins/ with a plugin.json manifest
({"label": "...", "command": "./run.sh"}) plus a script that reads
--south/--west/--north/--east and prints a GeoJSON FeatureCollection
to stdout (lib/maptool/plugins.rb) — that's the entire interface a
plugin needs to know about this app. The sidebar's new import icon
(logged in only, GET /api/plugins + POST /api/plugins/:name/run) lists
whatever's found and runs one for the current map viewport, saving its
output as a new .geojson file the same way an upload would be.

The point: a scraper for a site whose ToS forbids that (Park4Night,
iOverlander, Freecampsites) doesn't need to live in this public repo
to work here — its own directory just goes under plugins/ locally and
is never git add'ed, no special-casing needed anywhere.

plugins/overpass-pois wraps the existing rake overpass:pois query as
the first, in-repo, reference example of the contract.

Also fills in four modules (auth.js, locate.js, measure.js, notes.js)
missing from layout.erb's cache-busting importmap alongside adding
plugins.js's own entry — a pre-existing gap that meant they could keep
serving a stale cached copy across a deploy despite the importmap
existing specifically to prevent that.

randy 5576d2edf1 Note UX polish: pin marker, icon picker, fix Save button color
- The clicked location now stays marked (a plain maplibre-gl Marker,
removed on save/cancel/deactivate) while the note form is open —
before, nothing on the map showed where the pending note would land.
- POI_ICONS gains a dozen more symbols (water, dump station, toilets,
playground, viewpoint, swimming, fishing, climbing, hiking, …) via
Object.assign after PARK4NIGHT_TAGS' own icon constants are declared
(they're below POI_ICONS in the file, so the literal itself can't
reference them directly) — reused as real marker-badge glyphs, not
just PARK4NIGHT_TAGS' inline description-tag icons. NoteSaveForm
gets a picker grid for these, shown only for a Point note (a
Measure-drawn line/polygon has no one spot for a badge).
- Fixed: .notes-panel__save's blue background was losing to
  .notes-panel__actions button's gray — same class-vs-class+element
specificity trap .gpx-panel__action[hidden] already has a comment
about elsewhere in this file. The button was never actually blue.

Verified live (properly simulating a logged-in session this time, via
Page.addScriptToEvaluateOnNewDocument rather than a post-load DOM
poke, since NotesControl's mount decision happens once, synchronously,
at page load): marker appears and clears correctly, 19 icons + "none"
render and select, Save renders #1a5fb4. Full suite: 115 runs, 0
failures.

randy aa2b96ac70 Add a "user overlay" tool: click the map, save a note
New map-corner "Add note" control (public/js/notes.js), mirroring
measure.js's click-to-place UX. Click the map, write a short note,
pick an existing .geojson layer file or name a new one — saved via a
new GpxStore#append_feature (grows the target file in place, unlike
save()'s always-disambiguate-the-filename behavior) through a new
POST /api/gpx/notes route.

No new rendering path: a note is just another point in a .geojson
file the Tracks panel's tree already lists, checkboxes, and pops up —
visibility toggling ("layers") comes for free from that existing
machinery, per-file, with no changes needed there.

Points only for now — a polygon mode would need gpx.js's point/line
split taught a third Polygon bucket first, or a saved polygon
wouldn't render back on reload (see TODO.adoc).

Covered by new tests: GpxStore#append_feature (create/append/missing-
path/filename-safety) and the /api/gpx/notes route (auth gate, create,
append, malformed/missing-geometry rejection, 404 on a missing
target). Full suite: 97 runs, 0 failures.

randy 77a4c96b1c Add a hillshade/terrain-shading toggle to the map
Sidebar toggle (new HillshadeControl) adds a raster-dem hillshade
layer: public Terrarium tiles when online, or a local
data/terrain.pmtiles when present (mirrors offline.pmtiles' optional-
local-file pattern, new /api/terrain-tiles + /tiles/terrain.pmtiles
endpoints). No offline terrain data is bundled, so the toggle is
online-only until one is generated — see docs/development.adoc for
how.

randy 12635a48c3 Badge the exception (not yet cached) instead of the near-universal case
GpxStore#save converts eagerly, so "cached" is true for nearly every
file in the tree already — badging that was just noise. Flipped to
PENDING_ICON, shown only for the rare case: a .gpx/.fit dropped
straight into data/gpx/ on the filesystem, bypassing the app, and not
yet opened.

Also add an explicit download button next to delete (DOWNLOAD_ICON) —
the file name itself has been a download link since the last commit,
but isn't obviously clickable at a glance.

randy 44d235bbcf Show a GeoJSON icon next to files with a ready cache
GpxStore#tree now reports a "cached" flag per file (reusing the same
mtime freshness check geojson() already does); the file tree shows a
small curly-braces icon next to any file whose conversion is already
on disk, so it's visible which files will toggle on instantly versus
which still need to parse.

randy b6a9c1546e Add a distance/area measuring tool
CI / check (push) Successful in 46s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 15s
A ruler button in the top-left control stack, matching NPS's own
Area/Distance ruler. Click to add vertices; distance sums haversine
segment lengths, area uses the spherical-excess polygon formula
(same one turf.js's area() uses) rather than a flat shoelace, since a
flat approximation drifts at park-boundary scale. SI units only
(m/km, m²/km²) — no imperial toggle.

randy 170af80cac Add a Home button and fill icon gaps from NPS's newer symbol library
CI / check (push) Successful in 42s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 18s
Two things pulled in from github.com/nationalparkservice/npmap5-plugins:

- A "Home" button (public/vendor/npmap-home-button/, NPS's own MapLibre
control) pinned to the app's CENTER/ZOOM, sitting top-left on the map. Now
that the URL hash permalink can open the map at any view, "current view"
and "the default view" aren't the same thing anymore, so a quick way back
to the default is worth having.

- npmap5-plugins bundles a newer, actively-maintained version of the same
NPS symbol-library already used for POI_ICONS (confirmed by its
maintainer to be the designated replacement for the older standalone
repo: nationalparkservice/npmap5-plugins#4), with a much larger icon
vocabulary and a simpler CC0 (public domain) license. All 25 icons
already in use came back byte-identical from the new source, so this
just repoints their attribution — but it also has icons the old repo
didn't: `forest` (POI_ICONS) is now the official "wilderness" pictogram
instead of hand-drawn, and three of the five previously icon-less
Services/Activities tags (wifi, mobile data coverage, winter/snow
camping) now have real icons too. Only bakery and vehicle wash still
  have no NPS equivalent.

randy fd8852c0e1 Fix meta-row color regression, show Services/Activities as icon tags
CI / check (push) Successful in 43s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 15s
The gray color from the previous commit landed on .gpx-popup__meta (the
whole row, label and value both) instead of just .gpx-popup__meta-label —
only the label was supposed to be muted, the value should read as normal
text same as the description above it.

While in there: Services/Activities were showing park4night's own raw,
comma-separated codes ("animaux, point_eau, wc_public"), which don't mean
anything to a reader on their own. PARK4NIGHT_TAGS (icons.js) maps the
codes p4n2gpx's exports actually use to a human label and, where the
National Park Service's icon set (already used for POI_ICONS) has a
reasonable match, a small icon — formatTags (gpx.js) renders each as an
icon+label tag instead of raw text. A code not in that table just falls
back to its own raw text, so nothing is ever hidden.

randy 7de8428b05 Swap the pin marker for a rounded-square badge
CI / check (push) Successful in 43s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 14s
The National Park Service frames its own map symbols (the icons already
vendored in for POI categories) in a rounded square, not a pin — pairing a
pin shape with NPS-style pictograms looked like two mismatched icon
conventions. Switched the marker to a rounded square to match.

This also simplifies the placement code: a pin has to anchor at its tip, so
the category glyph on top needed an offset computed from the pin/glyph
geometry to land in the pin's head. A square has no tip — both the badge and
the glyph layer just center directly on the coordinate with no offset math
at all.

randy 2a83bb10ca Turn POI markers into pins and use a real icon set
CI / check (push) Successful in 42s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 16s
Colored circles for waypoints looked too similar to a base map style's own
small circular POI icons, so uploaded POI data blended into the map instead
of standing out. Switched the marker shape to a pin/teardrop (reusing the
existing WAYPOINT_ICON path, filled instead of stroked) — no base map style
uses that shape for its own points, so it reads immediately as "your data".
Anchored at its tip, the standard map-pin convention, rather than centered
on the coordinate.

Also swapped the hand-drawn category glyphs for the National Park Service's
own map symbols (github.com/nationalparkservice/symbol-library, BSD
licensed, forked from Mapbox's Maki) for the six categories it covers —
professional, purpose-built pictograms beat ad-hoc "fuel pump"/"picnic
table" line art. `forest` has no NPS equivalent and stays hand-drawn.

The glyph now sits in the pin's head rather than centered on a flat dot,
which needed real geometry (both layers anchor to the same point, so the
offset is the gap between where the pin's head-center ends up and where the
glyph's own visual center already sits) rather than the old anchor="center"
zero-offset placement.

randy 0b18dc018a Color-code, cluster and add icons to POI waypoints
CI / check (push) Successful in 47s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 16s
A park4night/OsmAnd POI export (e.g. a p4n2gpx area export) tags every
waypoint with a category and a per-category color/icon in its <extensions>
block, all of which was previously thrown away — every waypoint rendered as
the same plain red dot, unreadable once a file has a few thousand of them.

Maptool::Gpx now captures category/color/icon (waypoint_style), matched by
namespace URI rather than local element name: a p4n2gpx file carries both
<osmand:icon> and <locus:icon> side by side, and REXML strips prefixes from
Element#name, so both report as just "icon" — matching on that alone was
silently picking the (useless) Locus drawable path instead of the OsmAnd
category key. Regression test added for this.

On the map: waypoints are colored by category (falling back to the plain
track color for anything uncategorized), a small hand-drawn icon set
(public/js/icons.js's POI_ICONS, rasterized to SDF sprites at runtime) draws
a glyph on top for the categories it covers, the points source is clustered
so a dense export collapses into count bubbles instead of a solid blob, and
a legend in the side panel lists whichever categories are currently visible.

Splitting each file's GeoJSON into a lines source and a points source
(rather than one mixed source with a geometry-type filter per layer) was
needed for clustering, since MapLibre's cluster support only understands a
source made entirely of points.

randy 708c08259b Fix a severe GPX parse slowdown and add route (<rte>) support
CI / check (push) Successful in 43s
CI / deploy (push) Successful in 16s
GPX tracks were silently failing to render for large real-world files:
point_extensions used REXML's "extensions//*" XPath, and the // descendant
axis costs low-single-digit milliseconds per call regardless of subtree
size. Run once per point, that's negligible on small files but ~30s on a
real 8000-point track — long enough to hit a proxy timeout in production,
so the file just never appeared with no error. Replaced with plain
recursive child traversal (~40x faster on the same file, confirmed
29.9s -> 3.16s); test_parsing_many_points_with_extensions_stays_fast
guards against reintroducing it.

Also adds support for <rte> routes (not just <trk> tracks and <wpt>
waypoints), sharing the track/route conversion logic via a new
line_feature helper. Routes get their own "route" kind and a dashed
ROUTE_ICON in the file tree so the type is visible at a glance.

randy 06ea8ea141 Add file-kind icons to the GPX tree, fix drop into an empty panel
Each tree entry now shows a small waypoint/track icon based on a
cheap substring check for <wpt>/<trk> (Maptool::Gpx.kinds) rather than
a full REXML parse, since re-parsing a several-thousand-waypoint file
on every tree fetch would make the panel noticeably slower to open.

Also fix a real drop-target bug: .gpx-tree had no flex:1, so a
short/empty tree left blank panel space below it that wasn't part of
the drag & drop target — dropping a file there silently did nothing.

randy 87df90f75c Redesign UI as an OsmAnd-style sidebar, add live GNSS position via gpsd
Restructure the map controls from MapLibre corner buttons into a left
sidebar of icons with flyouts/panels (radar, GPX, GNSS), matching
OsmAnd's layout more closely:

- Base map and GPX selection are now full-height side panels docked
next to the sidebar (not small dropdown flyouts or a right-docked
panel), opening/closing exclusively via a small shared event bus
(panels.js) so only one is ever open at a time.
- The GPX panel's upload/new-folder controls are now icon buttons in
the header instead of an always-visible dropzone and form; dragging
a GPX file onto the tree, a specific folder, or straight onto the
  map itself all upload it.
- New: Maptool::GpsdClient (lib/maptool/gpsd_client.rb) streams live
GNSS fixes from a local gpsd daemon over Server-Sent Events
(/api/gnss/stream) to a marker on the map (public/js/gnss.js) — one
background gpsd connection shared by every browser tab.
- The online map style (public/js/osmand-style.js) is now styled to
resemble OsmAnd's own rendering, applied to both the online and
  offline (PMTiles) styles.

Also adds a GeolocateControl (browser geolocation) next to the zoom
controls.
